The world is changing rapidly. Our children will face different challenges in their lifetime to what we have experienced in ours and one of the most pressing issues for this generation of children and young people is the issue of climate change. We know climate change will affect the way our children live, work, and interact with the world. At Wonderschool, we believe in building the future we want to see for our children now.
Our vision at Wonderschool is to create connected communities that empower children to change the world. Whilst climate change is an overwhelmingly large and complex issue, we want to empower families, children, and Educators to make small daily changes that have a positive impact on the world around us. Using cloth nappies is just one of the things that we do to help save our environment and make Wonderschool wonderful.
By using cloth nappies in our centres, we are reducing our impact on the environment. 3.7 million disposable nappies are used in Australia every day according to some estimates. That is a lot of nappies in landfill, which can take 300 to 500 years to break down due to the plastics and chemicals from which they are made. In our Throsby centre alone, we care for 55 children in nappies a day on average. With 6 nappy changes a day, that can be up to 330 nappies per day that could potentially go to landfill.
As a young early childhood organisation, we have the opportunity to show leadership in environmental sustainability for early learning centres. We are proud to work with Conder House, a laundry and linen service driving positive environmental change that supplies all our ACT centres with cloth nappies and supports our Educators with training. Conder House has a home service available for families who are keen to make the switch in their home too. For families who are currently using disposable nappies we place the children in a disposable nappy before they go home.
